Job Status: Full-Time

Positions Supervised: 3 to 4

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 7:30-4:00 (Requires on call rotation)

Position Purpose: The Pipefitter is responsible for performing and assisting with a wide variety of skilled functions to construct, maintain, test, troubleshoot, and repair water and wastewater lines as directed by the Lead Pipefitter.

Core Functions

  • Perform a wide variety of skilled duties to construct new water and wastewater lines, including digging appropriate trenches, dynamiting rock and other obstructions, laying new pipe, connecting and installing hydrants, valves, and tees for new main lines with various diameters.
  • Maintain and repair existing water and wastewater mains requiring frequent trouble shooting, location of leaks, digging and replacement of tees, valves, pipe sections, changing meters, and making a wide variety of repairs to the system.  
  • Operate jack hammers, concrete saws, or heavy equipment as required to cut pavement, drill and shoot rocks, cut concrete pavement or drill under pavement for the installation of new services lines as required.
  • Make customer contact to investigate and resolve complaints and coordinate required repairs and/or new facility installation.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide variety of skilled pipefitting operations to install new water services with specializes equipment.
  • Perform a variety of maintenance procedures such as repairing valves, pumps, meters, fire hydrants, and other specialized equipment as required.
  • As part of a service oriented organization, perform any and all duties requested, whether scheduled or on an emergency basis.
  • Observes and follows all safety rules, procedures, standards and specification codes in all job aspects.

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Knowledge of constructing or repairing various equipment and pipe with a mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License
  • Ability to operate heavy construction equipment
  • Possess the dexterity to work heights, in confined spaces, and below ground level in trenches and open excavations.
  • Ability to work independently and self-direct assignment.
  • Basic computer skills that contain the fundamental concepts.
  • Communicate frequently in a professional manner with internal and external persons
  • Competencies include communication, vocational, and coordinating.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience constructing and repairing municipal water/wastewater pipe
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Drives Licensees
  • Previous experience operating heavy construction equipment (excavators, loaders, etc…)
  • Possession of a Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Class 2 Water Distribution and/or Wastewater Collection Certification.

Other requirements:

  • May be required to attend up to but not limited to 20 hours annually of certification training
  • Seek to stay abreast new technology to ensure best practices for operations
  • Leadership skills: intermediate
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license
